제1장 ‘바다의 세계’에서는 인간에게 있어서 바다란 어떠한 존재인가, 인간은 어떤 경로를 통해 연안에서 원양으로, 얕은 바다에서 심해로 진출하게 되었는가를 소개했다. 그리고 최초의 바다 탐험이 터무니없는 모험 가득한 항해로 시작되었다는 것과 오늘날에 이르러 심해가 얕은 바다와 마찬가지로 어떻게 연구 대상이 되었는지 그 경위를 기술했다.
