Misinformation, disinformation, and fake news abound and it’s increasingly difficult to know what’s true. Our media environment has become hyperpartisan. Science is conducted by press release. Startup culture elevates bullshit to high art. We are fairly well equipped to spot the sort of old-school bullshit that is based in fancy rhetoric and weasel words, but most of us don’t feel qualified to challenge the avalanche of new-school bullshit presented in the language of math, science, or statistics. In Calling Bullshit, Professors Carl Bergstrom and Jevin West give us a set of powerful tools to cut through the most intimidating data.

You don’t need a lot of technical expertise to call out problems with data. Are the numbers or results too good or too dramatic to be true? Is the claim comparing like with like? 이 책은 다음과 같은 말로 시작한다. “세상에는 헛소리가 넘쳐나고 우리는 그 속에서 익사 지경에 처했다.” 너무나 많은 소음이 발생하는 시대다. 워싱턴 대학교 생물학과 칼 T. 벅스트롬과 정보대학원 교수 제빈 D. 웨스트는 ‘헛소리 까발리기’라는 수업을 통해 많은 학생들에게 헛소리에 휘둘리지 않고, 정확히 생각하고 판단할 방법을 가르쳐왔다. 오늘날 눈부시게 발전한 정보통신 기술 덕분에 정보 접근성이 너무나 높아졌고, 주고받는 정보량은 급격히 많아졌다. 그 덕에 정보의 홍수와 함께 정보 과부하 또한 극심해졌다. 너무 많아진 정보량 중에서 우리가 걸러내야 할 헛소리 또한 그만큼 많아졌기에 부담은 더욱더 심해졌다.

정치인들은 더 이상 팩트에 얽매이지 않는다. 과학은 그럴싸하게 포장된 보도 자료를 통해 진행된다. 실리콘밸리의 스타트업은 실체가 없어도 예술적인 PR 하나만으로 엄청난 투자를 받는다. 헛소리는 특정한 사안에 관해 사람들을 호도하여 우리 세계를 오염시키고, 정보를 신뢰하는 능력을 약화시킨다. 즉, 헛소리는 개개인만이 아니라 사회 전체적으로 불필요한 낭비를 만든다는 것이다. 오늘날 세상은 헛소리가 가득하다. 게다가 헛소리도 엄청나게 발전하였다. 현대의 헛소리꾼은 정량적 데이터로 제시된 헛소리를 퍼뜨린다. 이러한 형태의 정보는 가짜임에도 우리가 이의를 제기할 수 없도록 만들어 버린다.
