필명은 엘리스 벨(Ellis Bell)이고, 1818년 7월 30일, 잉글랜드 북부 요크셔 주의 손턴에서 패트릭 브론테와 마리아 브론테의 5남 1녀 중 넷째 딸로 태어났다. 샬럿 브론테의 동생이고, 앤 브론테의 언니이다. 목사인 아버지가 궁벽한 곳에 자리 잡은 한촌으로 전근하게 되자 에밀리 자매들은 그 황량한 벽지의 목사관에서 어린 시절을 보낼 수밖에 없었다. 세살 때 어머니를 여의었고, 손위 이모가 집안일을 돌봐 준다. 1824년 언니 샬럿을 따라 코완 브리지 학교에 입학하지만 일 년 만에 두 언니가 사망하자 샬럿과 에밀리는 고향으로 돌아온다. 1834년 에밀리가 동생 앤과 함께 쓴 자서전적인 글 4편 중 제1편이 완성된다. 나머지 3편은 각각 1837년, 1841년, 1845년에 따로따로 썼다. 1840년, 에밀리는 다시 하워스에 있는 샬럿을 찾아가 함께 브뤼셀에 있는 학교에 들어가지만 이모가 사망했다는 소식을 듣고 고향으로 귀향해서 정착한다. 1846년 샬럿과 에밀리, 앤 세 자매는 각자 자기 이름의 머리글자로 시작되는 필명을 써서 《커러, 엘리스, 액턴 벨의 시집(Poems by Currer, Ellis, and Acton Bell)》을 함께 출판했지만 별 반향을 불러일으키지 못했다. 하지만 에밀리는《죄수[The Prisoner]》, 《내 영혼은 비겁하지 않노라[No Coward Soul is Mine]》 등을 출간하면서 시인으로서의 재능을 인정받는다. 1847년에 에밀리의 유일한 소설인 <폭풍의 언덕>이 완성되면서 샬럿의 <제인 에어>, 에밀리의 <폭풍의 언덕>, 앤의 <아그네스 그레이>가 차례로 출간되었다. 하지만 에밀리의 건강 상태가 급속도로 나빠지면서 결국 1848년 12월 19일 폐결핵으로 짧은 생애를 마쳤다.
