저자(글) Ritzer, George
메릴랜드 대학교의 사회학교수이며, 소비이론,지구화이론, 메타이론,근대사회이론,탈근대사회이론 분야의 독특한 업적으로 매우널리 알려진 사회학자다. 특히 그는 1993년에 출판한 사회의 맥도날드화 가 화제를 불어일으키면서 대중적으로 유명해졌으며 그책은 사회학자의 저작으로서는 대중적으로 가장 많이 읽힌 책이 되엇다. 리처는 베버적 전통의 비판주의적 입장을 견지하면서 현대적 삶에 대한 비판적 분석을 수행하고 있다. 리처는 뉴욕에서 나고 자랐으며, 심리학을 전공하고 MBA 학위를 취득하였다. 조직행동으로 박사학위를 받았지만 놀랍게도 사회학은 정식으로 공부한 바 없이 독학으로 깨우쳤다. 1968년 부터 몇몇대학에서 사회학 조교수로 재직하다가 1974년에 메릴랸드 대학교 사회학 정교수가 되었다.
