매사추세츠공과대학교MIT 슬론 경영대학원 석좌교수이자 조직심리학의 대가. 조직문화와 조직개발 분야의 이론적 토대를 닦고 발전시키는 데 큰 기여를 했으며, 애플, 디지털이퀴프먼트코퍼레이션, 시티은행, PG&E, 휴렛팩커드, 셸, BP, 싱가포르 정부, 국제원자력기구 등 수많은 조직이 그의 컨설팅을 거쳤다. 시카고대학교, 스탠퍼드대학교, 하버드대학교에서 공부했으며 1952년 하버드대학교에서 사회심리학 박사 학위를 받았다. 이후 월터 리드 미 육군 연구소WRAIR에서 4년간 일했고 1956년 MIT 슬론 경영대학원 교수로 임명되어 약 52년간 가르쳤다. 《리더의 질문법》은 샤인이 평생 리더들의 성공을 돕는 과정에서 배우고 실천했던 것들을 농축한 책으로, 2013년 초판 출간 후 그가 92세가 된 2021년, 실리콘밸리의 전략 컨설턴트인 아들 피터 샤인과 함께 수정·보완해 낸 개정판이다. 전 세계 17개국 출간, 미국에서만 20만 부 넘게 팔린 베스트셀러로, 샌디에이고대학교 리더십학과의 리더십 도서상을 수상했다. 《조직심리학》(3판), 《새로 쓴 절차 컨설팅》, 《경력의 닻》(4판, 공저), 《겸손한 컨설팅》, 《헬핑》 등 많은 책을 집필했으며, 피터 샤인과 《조직문화와 리더십》(5판), 《겸손한 리더십》(노틸러스도서상 은메달), 《기업문화 생존안내서》(3판) 등을 썼다. 현재 조직문화리더십연구소OCLI.org 공동설립자로 전 세계 민간·공공부문 기관의 고위 경영진을 대상으로 컨설팅을 제공하고 있다. 2009년 전미경영학회AOM로부터 저명학자·현업종사자상을, 2012년 국제리더십협회ILA로부터 공로상을, 2015년 국제조직개발네트워크IODA Network로부터 조직개발 공로상을 수상했으며 슬로베니아 IEDC 블레드 경영대학원 명예 박사 학위를 받았다.
