저자(글) Charles Bukowski
1920년 독일 안데르나흐에서 미군이었던 아버지와 독일인 어머니 사이에서 태어났다. 세 살 때 미국으로 건너가 로스앤젤레스에서 줄곧 살았다. 1944년에 첫 단편을, 2년 후에 두번째 단편을 발표했지만 출판계의 현실에 환멸을 느끼고 10년 가까이 글쓰기를 중단했다. 대학을 중퇴하고 이십대의 반 이상을 싸구려 일자리와 허름한 하숙집을 전전하며 미국 전역을 유랑했다. 삼십대 초반 궤양출혈로 죽음의 고비를 넘긴 뒤부터 시를 쓰기 시작했다. 우편배달부로 일하면서 여러 권의 시집을 발표하고 신문에 칼럼을 발표하다가 '죽을 때까지 매달 백 달러의 월급'을 보장하겠다는 출판사의 제안을 받고 마흔아홉의 나이에 전업 작가의 길로 들어섰다. 이후 <우체국>(1971), <팩토텀>(1975), <여자들>(1978)을 발표했다. 이 세 작품은 '부코우스키 삼부작'으로 불리는데, <팩토텀>은 그중에서도 가장 뛰어난 작품으로 꼽힌다. 세 작품 모두 작가의 분신이라고 할 수 있는 '헨리 치나스키'가 등장하는 일종의 자전적 소설이다. 헨리 치나스키는 미국 대중문화에서 안티히어로의 정점으로 평가받고 있다.
