1608년 영국 런던에서 부유한 공증인의 아들로 태어났다. 당시 유명한 신학자였던 토머스 영에게 시사를 했고, 16세 때 이미 성경의 '시편' 일부를 운문으로 번역했다. 17세 때 케임브리지의 크라이스트 칼리지에 입학했고, 24세 때 문학석사로 졸업할때까지 최초의 걸작 '그리스도 탄생하신 날 아침에' 를 비롯한 여러 편의 소네트를 썼다. 이후 약 10년간은 밀턴의 생이 중 가장 평화로운 시기로 독서와 여행을 통해 시인으로서의 기반을 닦은 시기였다. 그의 주요 시편들과 가면극이 이 시기에 발표되었다. 1640년 제2차 주교전쟁을 시발로 그는 논쟁과 정쟁의 와중에 몸을 던져 이후 수많은 정치적 신문을 발표하였고, 크롬웰 공화정부에 적극적으로 가담하여 크롬웰의 라틴어 비서관으로 복무했다. 1660년의 왕정복고로 간신히 목숨만 건진 밀턴은 재산 몰수와 정치적 탄압, 그리고 실명과 가정불화로 절망과 고독에 시달렸다. 1667년, 왕정복고 2년 전부터 집필하던 '실낙원'을 발표했고, 4년 후인 1771년 '복낙원'과 '투사삼손'을 발표했다. '실낙원'은 출간 당시 존 드라이든을 비롯한 당대 비평가들에게서 호메로스나 베르길리우스의 작품에 비길 대작으로 극찬을 받았다. 밀턴은 1674년 지병이 악화되어 생을 마감했다. '실낙원'은 전 12편으로 구성된 방대한 작품이다. 사탄의 반역과 몰락, 그리고 인류 최초의 남녀인 아담과 이브의 낙원 추방을 테마로 한 이 장편 서사시는 장엄한 문체와 심오한 종교적 통찰을 담은 대작이다. 서사시라는 고전문학의 형식에 인간의 원죄와 구원의 가능성이라는 그리스도교적 내용을 성공적으로 융합시킨 걸작으로 평가되고 있으며 단테의 '신곡'과 더불어 최고의 종교 서사시로 평가된다.
