An up-to-date and comprehensive state of the art guide to the latest theory and practice in creativity studies in English language and literature
'Creativity in Language and Literature is a provocative and valuable book. Its breadth of topics, variety of approaches, and self-consciously creative and dialogic nature are especially appropriate and creative ways of approaching the subject of creativity. The scope, variety and original content of this book make it a unique contribution to the field' - Professor David L. Hoover, New York University, USA This unique resource brings together contributions from creative practitioners and academic researchers working across different disciplines. Researchers, literary authors, editors, performers and film makers reflect on their work and collectively explore the art of creativity in language and literature. Creativity in Language and Literature covers a range of texts, genres and practices, such as poetry, hip hop, film, story telling, web chat and pen-friend correspondence. Each part of the book begins with an introduction and the final part includes critical responses to the idea of linguistic creativity, encouraging ongoing dialogue and debate. This richly diverse collection is an ideal text for students and practitioners working at all levels. With contributions by Patience Agbabi, Daniel Allington, R. Amritavalli, Richard D. Creativity in Languageis a provocative and valuable book. Its breadth of topics, variety of approaches, and self-consciously creative and dialogic nature are especially appropriate and creative ways of approaching the subject of creativity. The range of levels of difficulty, and the concentration on creativity in both everyday contexts and literary ones and in a wide range of genres, give potential teachers the opportunity to make assignments based on the needs and levels of preparation of their own students. The scope, variety, and original content of this book make it a unique contribution to the field. - Professor David L. Hoover, New York University

"The authors are right, I think, in saying that there is really no competition for this book. The broad scope; the widely varied modes, genres, approaches; the use of original rather than republished work; and the emphasis on a critical dialogue between often contrasting and sometimes almost antithetical approaches all make this a very fresh approach. I'm especially pleased to see some emphasis on esthetics and literary value, an area that has, for too long, at least in the US, been ignored, or, rather, avoided. This is a timely focus for the US market, in which I believe there is a strong resurgence of interest in the category of the esthetic and in questions of literary value after a long spell of reading and studying texts because of their cultural interest rather than their esthetic qualities The combination of practical, every day, applied approaches and more theoretical ones is an excellent feature, one that I think will be especially effective in fostering the very attractive dialogic nature of the discussion among the various parts of the text. It is a very appropriately creative way of approaching creativity. The range in size/type between the empirical/critical/academic chapters and the illustrative material, literary extracts, and commentary from performers and other creators seems likely to make the book more readable than it might otherwise be. I am quite enthusiastic about the project. I think this will be an important and very timely book, and I would expect it to be widely read and discussed. I would seriously consider adopting it as a text for my graduate course, 'Language and Style.'" -- David L. Hoover, New York University
